Retrace 69 - Name Mistransliteration

This is just a little personal thing of mine, a bit of a rant, which is why I put it under the Read More (as well as to avoid spoilers). But it just deals with the transliteration of a certain Blond Haired Glen’s name~

Edit: My frustration is more directed to those who have done translations and whatnot, rather than those who actually used the mistransliteration.

This is just a pet peeve of mine but…I’m 99.9% certain that “Revy” is supposed to be transliterated to the name “Levi.” Since “Revy” is merely a direct transliteration of レ(re)ヴィ(vi/y). “Re” in Katakana usually gets transliterated to “le.” So, every time I see someone use “Revy” it just really annoys me because:

1. People are basically just using Engrish here. It’s like people are saying “rabu” instead “love.” And…

2. “Revy” isn’t a name. Or, at least, it is not a common name in the least. I found one Norwegian woman with the name and a female character from Black Lagoon who goes by the nickname Revy, but that was it. And in the latter’s case, I’m quite certain that the name should be transliterated to Reby/Rebe because it was a nickname for “Rebecca” and “v” （ヴ） and “b”（ブ）sounds are interchangeable in Japanese (and, therefore, in Katakana a “V” can stand for a “B” and a “B” can stand for a “V”), as is seen in the case of Oz Vessalius, which use to be incorrectly transliterated with a “B” instead of a “V” in the very beginning of this series.

Personally, I think that his name should be transliterated to “Levi” instead. Because, it is the correct transliteration of “re” and “vi/y” and because it is an actual name. A large portion of the fandom probably won’t use it though. That’s okay…It’ll just bug me and I’ll have to deal with it. -.-
